The human interference in this old village of fishermen is limited on only few hotels, restaurants and villas. The only Hotel directly at the foot of the Monte Conero at full length of the coast is the old Napoleonic Fortress. Renowned touristic destination, the bay of Portonovo is immersed in wonderful glimpses of pure nature. The territory of Portonovo, integral part of the Monte Conero, a mount inhabited since the prehistory by these populations: ‘’piceni’’, doric, romans, byzantine, papal, French and finally Italian. A unique trail of the monastic life, which marked this zone in the Middle Ages, with hermits in search of silence and loneliness, is the enchanting little church of S. Maria, a romanic masterpiece of the XI century. Along the beach, old landing and foray place of Turkish ships, you can find important historical trails: the Guard Tower, built in the 18 century in order to defend the territory from the pirates, and our ‘’Fortino Napoleonico’’, old military fortress, become, in the late 60’s, the well-known 4-star hotel and restaurant. Jewel of the Monte Conero’s regional parc, Portnovo is located in a still intact natural context, where the mediterran scrub touches the crystal clear sea. The strand, which derives from a landslide broken away from ‘’pian grande’’ a long time ago, shines of the white stone pebbles of the ‘’Monte Conero’’, continuously smoothed by the waves. Two saltish little lakes, on which a lot of legends are told, upgrade a unique place, become in part wildlife park.
